Voters selected “We Are … Greene County” as the winning sculpture in Jefferson Matters: Main Street’s second annual Ring Out for Art sculpture contest. The selection was made by people’s choice voting during the Bell Tower Festival June 9-10.
“We Are … Greene County” is a collaboration by Shane Olson of Churdan and Jolene Peters of Carroll. The two intended to bring together images of the county as well as its history. They used several different types of steel to convey both strength and the diversity of the people.
Olson and Peters received $2,000. All prize money for the contest was provided by Home State Bank.
Second place went to “The Catch” by Anna Modeland of Boone. The sculpture shows an eagle snagging a fish, with a bell added to the eagle’s neck. She won $1,000.
Third place went to “Iowa” by Zachary Bowman of Ankeny. He used sweeping lines to mimic the shape of the bells on the Mahanay Memorial Carillon Tower. He received $500.
All three sculptures will be displayed on the south plaza at the courthouse for the coming year.
